Palm Sunday: A Prophecy Fulfilled
Recently in one of my Bible studies I’ve been studying the book of Mark. And it’s been amazing to see how prophecies in the Old Testament are fulfilled in Mark.
Likewise, the entry of Jesus on a donkey is a fulfillment of prophecy. John references Zachariah 9:9 when describing this moment:
“And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
‘Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!’’
~ John 12:14, ESV
Many years ago, the promise that Jesus the King would come on a donkey was fulfilled.
Each Palm Sunday when we commemorate this past moment of Jesus’ triumphant arrival as a fulfillment of prophecy, it is not only a moment of history to celebrate, but a moment that gives us hope for a fulfillment of a future prophecy: that Jesus will arrive once again but this time in all His glory and splendor.
As written in Revelation 19:11, Jesus is to come as described:
“ Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.”
~ Revelation 19:11, ESV
This Palm Sunday, let us not only remember this historical moment which fulfilled prophecy, but find hope in it for the fulfillment of the promise that Jesus will return again.
